What is oral conscious sedation?

What is oral conscious sedation?

Oral conscious sedation can help patients who suffer from dental anxiety to receive the oral healthcare they need. Here, our Surrey dentist explains more about how oral conscious sedation works.

For patients who suffer from moderate to extreme dental anxiety, oral conscious sedation can help to make a trip to the dentist less stressful.

What is oral conscious sedation?

In order to help you feel more relaxed during dental appointments and treatments, your dentist can administer oral conscious sedation using prescription medication.

Oral conscious sedation lasts long enough to help anxious or nervous patients get through most routine dental procedures and treatments.

How will oral conscious sedation make me feel?

This form of sedation will help you to feel calm and at ease throughout your dental treatment. You will feel very relaxed but still remain conscious. Some patients actually feel so relaxed with oral conscious sedation that they even doze off during their procedure!

How oral conscious sedation will be used is decided by the dentist on a case-by-case basis. This form of sedation is considered safe for most healthy patients. If you think dental sedation may help you, speak to your dentist. Prior to treatment, you will be required to provide your dentist with a full medical history in order to avoid any drug interactions and to determine whether oral sedation is appropriate for you.

When undergoing dental treatment with oral conscious sedation, it's important to arrange for someone to take you home once your appointment is finished. Even though you will be conscious during your treatment, you will not be able to drive after your sedation appointment.
