If you're looking to whiten your teeth and brighten your smile, you may be wondering if whitening toothpastes will work for you. Here's a little about whitening toothpastes from our Surrey dentist.
Since the very earliest times in history, people have used a variety of methods for cleaning their teeth and brightening their smiles.
These days there are an enormous number of products that claim to remove stains and whiten our teeth, but do they work?
The short answer is...sort of.
To actually whiten teeth a solution containing hydrogen peroxide is required, that's why many whitening toothpastes contain peroxide. However, the amount of peroxide in toothpaste is very small and typically whitening toothpastes do not whiten teeth any more than regular toothpastes.
That said, while no toothpaste appears to actually whiten teeth, with thorough brushing these toothpastes may remove surface stains from teeth which can help to make your teeth appear whiter.
Controlling tartar buildup is also key to improving the appearance of your smile. Tartar is a yellowish hard material that will gradual build up on a tooth as a result of poor oral hygiene. To prevent this yellow buildup be sure to brush thoroughly for two minutes, twice daily using whichever toothpaste you prefer, floss daily and visit your dentist every 6 months.
How well you care for your teeth is more likely to affect the health and appearance of your smile than the type of toothpaste you choose.
If you feel that your teeth are looking dull and discoloured, effective whitening treatments are available from your dentist.
