Our patients often ask us if dental implants will feel like natural teeth. Implants are a popular tooth replacement option because they give wearers a very natural look and feel. But how natural do they feel? Here our Surrey dentist explains a little more about dental implants.
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a tiny titanium screw that is implanted into the jaw bone to act as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth. Implants are made from titanium because it is biocompatible. That means the screw can fuse with bone and become a solid foundation for the restoration that goes on top. Depending on the number of teeth being replaced, a dental crown, bridge, or denture, make up the restoration portion of the implant.
Do dental implants feel natural?
Dental implants are not alive like natural teeth. That means that the implant doesn’t have any nerves in it to feel sensations, so you won’t have any feeling in the implant itself. Any feeling you experience related to the implant will actually be coming from the gum tissue surrounding the implant.
That said, dental implants look and function almost exactly like natural teeth. They are designed to blend in perfectly with the surrounding natural teeth, and you care for them just like you care for your natural teeth.
Chances are that once your implant has healed, and you’ve had a few weeks to get used to it, you’ll hardly notice the difference at all!
