Over the counter whitening treatments are not very effective. These products ususally only remove surface stains, which does address the real discolouration, and does not result in a significantly whiter smile.
Whitening strips, toothpastes and rinses also don’t whiten caps, bonding, veneers or any other dental restorations. They only work on the natural teeth, meaning that if you have dental restorations, you may end up with a somewhat unevenly coloured smile.
Professional teeth whitening, on the other hand, is done at your dentist’s office, and is therefore more controlled. In addition, it is often done as part of a broader dental restoration plan, in conjunction with other restorative treatments. Usually, we will whiten your natural teeth whiten first, and then have the restorations completed to match the new, whiter colour.
Professional whitening products produce much more noticeable results than over the counter products do because, they remove surface stains and also lighten the actual colour of the teeth.
Although professional whitening products are more expensive than over the counter products, the price difference is worth it for the superior results!
